They are responsible for upholding the core performance measures of respiratory-related patient care. It should be noted that accreditation by The Joint Commission is usually a requirement for Medicare and Medicaid reimbursements by the majority of state governments in the United States. Typically, healthcare organizations are subject to a three-year accreditation cycle by The Joint Commission that involves an unannounced survey and inspection. This means that each hospital or organization will not receive an advanced notice of the survey date. Instead, The Joint Commission shows up randomly to inspect the facility and ensure that medical care is being delivered according to their standards. If compliance is deemed applicable, accreditation is awarded to that organization.
